This course is designed to give the student an overview of the fundamentals of digital curation theory and best practices in libraries, archives and museums. On completion of the course, the student will have a working knowledge of theory, best practices for establishing and maintaining digital curation programs and initiatives, and feedback on work on digital curation projects in the students’ own workplace or area of interest and study. This course can be taken as one of six courses needed to earn our Certificate in Digital Curation, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.

Course Description

This course is designed to give the student an overview of the fundamentals of digital curation theory and best practices in libraries, archives and museums. On completion of the course, the student will have a working knowledge of theory, best practices for establishing and maintaining digital curation programs and initiatives, and feedback on work on digital curation projects in the students’ own workplace or area of interest and study. Course goals:

  • History and guiding theories of the digital curation field in libraries, archives and museums.
  • Digital curation programs: best practices, management, and collaboration.
  • Introduction to organization and classification of digital assets.
  • Introduction to ethical and legal issues in digital curation.

This course can be taken as one of six courses needed to earn our Certificate in Digital Curation, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.

Mēgan A. Oliver

Mēgan A. Oliver Mēgan A. Oliver (she/her) earned her MLIS in 2011, and has worked at Florida State University’s Ringling Museum, SUNY Purchase College, and the University of South Carolina. She is currently the Head of Digital Projects at the University of Missouri Kansas City and an adjunct lecturer at the iSchool, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests include a dedication to ethical workplaces, sustainable digital curation, and disability advocacy.
