Online Instructional Design and Delivery

Are you responsible for developing and teaching an online course? Although the task may sound daunting, this six week course will navigate participants through course design and delivery. Following Wiggins and McTighe’s principle of backward design, the course first focuses upon learning outcomes, then align assessments, instructional, and learning activities with those outcomes. No matter how good the course design, a true student learning experience is always enhanced by the instructor’s presence. This course delves into online instructor strategies for keeping online students on task and remedying student misbehavior in the online classroom. By the end of this course, participants will have a basic blueprint for building their own online course.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Determine the importance of learning objectives in relation to assessments.
- Explore various instructional materials and learning activities to enhance student learning outcomes.
- Identify techniques for increasing instructor presence in an online course.
- Explore techniques to help pace students in an online course.
- Discuss various student online misbehaviors and identify ways to remediate such behavior.
This course can be taken as one of the courses in our eight-course Certificate in Library Instruction, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.
Mimi O’Malley is the learning technology translation strategist at Spalding University. She helps faculty prepare course content for hybrid and fully online courses in addition to incorporating open education resources into courses. She previously wrote and facilitated professional development courses and workshops at the Learning House, Inc. Mimi has presented workshops on online learning topics including assessment, plagiarism, copyright, and curriculum trends at the Learning House, Inc. This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment.
