Did you know that 5.8 million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias? Family members and friends often become caregivers to those with dementia. A dementia diagnosis can be an isolating and confusing experience for both the diagnosed individual and the caregiver. The public library has an opportunity to create services, collections, and programs that are supportive to families dealing with dementia.
This course will walk you through all the steps that are needed to make your public library dementia friendly. At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the core concepts of dementia
- Deliver specialized customer service to folks with dementia and their caregivers with ease
- Develop collections of books, audio, and tactile objects that can help those with memory loss
- Rethink library spaces to be dementia-friendly
- Create programs and form community partnerships that can help both caregivers and people with dementia
Course Description

Barbara Alvarez
Barbara Alvarez has partnered with numerous library professionals, local businesses and organizations to share digital stories through podcasts, videos, and broadcasting. She is the co-founder of The Library OnConference, a free virtual conference completely held on Google Hangouts that has garnered nearly 500 participants. Additionally, she received the 2015 Public Librarian Support Award for innovation and creativity in the library’s community. She is the author of the book Embedded Business Librarianship for the Public Librarian with ALA Editions. Barbara received a Master in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign.
