This course will give you an understanding of how to establish an archive from the ground up and grow the archival collection. We start off the course by looking at how an archive can best serve its community or institution and what foundational structures need to be in place before you even begin collecting. We’ll look at how to create a mission and scope of collection and draft an archives policy. We’ll then delve into appraisal theory and techniques for all types of media, from textual records to electronic, and how to conduct a regional and in-house survey of possible new acquisitions. Finally, we will look at the acquisition and accessioning process for both special collections and institutional archives. Learning objectives:

Carey Stumm is an Archivist at the National Archives and Adjunct Professor at Queens College. She has worked in archives and museums for over 20 years. Past experience includes Digital Collection Librarian at Experience Music Project, Registrar and Collection Assistant at Museum of the Moving Image, Archivist and Collection Manager at New York Transit Museum, Collection Coordinator at Coney Island Museum.
