Course Description

Library Patron Access and the Law is a practical course to help identify areas in which librarians can proactively take steps to ensure compliance with legal requirements. Libraries that are open to the public and libraries open only to a more specialized community must both ensure that their patrons have access to information while balancing safety and other needs of the library’s community.

Join Mary Minow in this 4-week course as she takes you through two topics of particular interest: (1) Patron behavior policies and (2) Access to information by patrons with disabilities. You will address an issue or problem in each area, and work through legal frameworks to see how to minimize risk and maximize access.

By the end of the course, you will know how to identify problems in patron behavior policies and learn how to ensure that your library offers due process to aggrieved patrons. You will know the basic legal requirements for access by patrons with disabilities, at the federal level, and how to check your local laws for any additional requirements. You will be given the opportunity to discuss these topics as they apply to your library, and be given resources to continue your learning.
