This four-week, asynchronous online course provides an introduction to, and hands-on practice in, the indexing process for books. The main objective is to provide the student with a beginning skill set in producing a traditional back-of-the-book index. The intellectual and technical skills used will also be applicable to the indexing of other materials of various sorts. Topics will include: plumbing the indexer mindset; how users approach and use indexes; types of indexes; index term selection and entry formation; publisher requirements and considerations; characteristics of a high- quality index; the technological toolbox of the 21st century indexer (i.e.: macros and indexing software and embedded indexing).

  • Be able to identify the characteristics of a quality index
  • Have an understanding of the technologies involved in 21st century indexing
  • Have a developed resource toolkit for further skill development

Rudy Leon

Rudy LeonRudy Leon (she/her or they/them) has been a full-time professional indexer and copyeditor since 2016. Her indexing work is focused on scholarly books and she is self-training herself on indexing cookbooks. Before taking up editorial work full-time, Rudy had a long career as an academic librarian (outreach and instruction), including serving as an Associate Dean at the UNC Wilmington Randall Library. Located in Reno, NV, Rudy balances the isolation of freelancing from home with political engagement (and is currently running for political office) and enjoyment of the Sierra Nevadas and Lake Tahoe.
