This course is designed for library workers who want to develop their skills in survey creation, data collection, and analysis. Participants will learn about best practices in writing survey questions, scale creation, and sampling design and how to apply these techniques to their own survey projects. This course will demonstrate strategies for ensuring reliability and validity in survey methods and evaluating potential bias and uncertainty in survey results. Participants will also use example survey results to practice common approaches to survey analysis. This course is intended for practitioners who are both new to survey methods and those who have already used surveys and want to increase their understanding of survey methodologies. Previous experience with survey analysis or statistics is not required.
At the end of this course participants will be able to:
Write effective survey items
Choose & construct survey scales appropriate to research questions
Create a representative sampling strategy
Calculate survey response rates and margin of errors
Conduct cognitive interviews to test validity of survey questions
Describe & interpret reliability measurements
Analyze survey responses to identify patterns

Dr. Andrew Asher is the Director for Organizational Research, Analytics, and Strategy at the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries, where he leads institution-wide qualitative and quantitative evaluation programs, conducts research on the anthropology of information, and teaches research methods in information science. Asher holds a PhD in sociocultural anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has written and presented widely on applying ethnographic methods to libraries.
