Patron-perpetrated sexual harassment (PPSH), or third-party sexual harassment, is an all too common experience for many front-end library workers. In fact, a 2024 survey conducted by Benjes-Small et al. found that 89.3% of library worker respondents reported experiencing at least one sexually harassing behavior in the workplace. Given the pervasive nature of PPSH, it is essential that libraries are properly fortified to effectively prevent and address this problem.
This course will provide library leaders and stakeholders with the tools necessary to combat PPSH, prevent workplace abuse, and encourage a safe and productive work environment.
Course objectives:
-Compare differing definitions of sexual harassment
– Recognize the short- and long-term impacts of PPSH on workplace culture
– Identify practical approaches to providing immediate and ongoing to staff support after incidents of PPSH
– Evaluate various tools for policy writing and enforcement
This course is ideal for administrative and supervisory library staff serving in public libraries.
