This course will address recruitment strategies that will improve your chance of attracting a diverse pool of applicants and minimize the influence of unintended biases in the selection process. Of course, hiring is just the first step to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We will also address factors that influence the long term retention of librarians from underrepresented minority groups.

Course Description

We have been discussing the lack of diversity among librarians for decades, but librarianship remains overwhelmingly white. This is at least in part due to the influence of unexamined biases affecting the recruitment of librarians of color, and a failure to retain many of the librarians of color who are hired.

This course will address recruitment strategies that will improve your chance of attracting a diverse pool of applicants and minimize the influence of unintended biases in the selection process. Of course, hiring is just the first step to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We will also address factors that influence the long term retention of librarians from underrepresented minority groups.

Participants will:

  • Discuss strategies to minimize the effect of implicit bias in hiring practices
  • Discuss strategies to recruit a diverse pool of applicants
  • Identify factors that affect your library’s likelihood of retaining librarians from underrepresented minority groups

This course can be taken as one of four courses needed to earn our Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion Skills, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.

Tarida Anantachai

Tarida Anantachai (she/her) is the Director, Inclusion & Talent Management at the NC State University Libraries. Her research and professional interests include topics around equity, diversity, and inclusion; early career development; leadership; and outreach programming. Tarida was an ARL Leadership and Career Development Program Fellow, a participant in the MN Institute for Early Career Librarians, and an ALA Emerging Leader. Tarida received her MSLIS from the University of Illinois.

Twanna Hodge

Twanna HodgeTwanna Hodge is pursuing her Ph.D. in Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her previous position was the diversity, equity, and inclusion librarian at the University of Florida. She holds a BA in Humanities from the University of the Virgin Islands and an MLIS from the University of Washington. Her research interests include diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility issues and efforts in the workplace and LIS education; library residencies and fellowships; cultural humility in LIS education and librarianship; and the retention of Black students in LIS programs. She is a 2013 American Library Association (ALA) Spectrum Scholar, a 2018 ALA Emerging Leader, and a 2022 ALA Spectrum Doctoral Fellow.
