This course covers principles of appraisal and collection development for creating unique digital collections that form part of an institutional repository or digital special collections. Using archival theory and principles of digital curation, the student will gain the understanding necessary to select digital materials that are in line with institutional and community collecting guidelines and missions. This course will also allow students to receive feedback and guidance on current appraisal or collection development projects they may have underway at their place of work or that are of personal study interest to the student.

Course goals:

  • Introduction to key concepts of archival theory as it pertains to the appraisal and acquisition process for unique digital materials and digital collections
  • Exploration of key areas and concepts of appraisal specific to digital curation: data sets, databases, email, digitized content, e-books, and other types of digitized and born-digital content.
  • Legal and ethical issues related to selecting, retaining and discarding of digital collections

This course can be taken as one of six courses needed to earn our Certificate in Digital Curation, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.

Carey Stumm

Carey StummCarey Stumm is an Archivist at the National Archives and Adjunct Professor at Queens College. She has worked in archives and museums for over 20 years. Past experience includes Digital Collection Librarian at Experience Music Project, Registrar and Collection Assistant at Museum of the Moving Image, Archivist and Collection Manager at New York Transit Museum, Collection Coordinator at Coney Island Museum.
