Combining the latest research and day-to-day experiences from a variety of library settings, this course provides an in-depth look at media mentorship and how to support families with young children in the digital age. Topics covered will include early literacy, family engagement, diversity, and the digital divide. Coursework and discussions will cover the three types of media mentorship: media advisory and evaluation, programming (storytime) and supported access to curated content.

After taking this class, successful participants will be able to:
Expectations: This class is four weeks of content. There WILL be homework during the fourth week which will be due by the end of the fifth week. Although there are individual differences, you may expect each week to take 3 – 4 hours of work which includes the readings, watching the presentations, participating in forums, and submitting assignments.

This course is part of our Certificate in Early Childhood Literacy, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.
Claudia Haines leads dynamic toddler, preschool and family storytimes, hosts maker programs, and gets great media into the hands of kids and teens as the Youth Services Librarian and media mentor at the Homer Public Library (Alaska). She trains other librarians as media mentors and serves on both local and national committees that support families and literacy. She is the co-author of the Association for Library Service to Children's white paper on media mentorship and the book Becoming a Media Mentor: A Guide for Working with Children and Families.
