Course Description

Combining the latest research and day-to-day experiences from a variety of library settings, this course provides an in-depth look at media mentorship and how to support families with young children in the digital age. Topics covered will include early literacy, family engagement, diversity, and the digital divide. Coursework and discussions will cover the three types of media mentorship: media advisory and evaluation, programming (storytime) and supported access to curated content.

After taking this class, successful participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of a media mentor
  • Be familiar with and use current research to establish guidelines for developmentally appropriate and intentional use of new media within their library’s programming for children.
  • Evaluate and select new media for use with young children
  • Apply previous experience and new knowledge to program design using new and traditional media.
  • Identify opportunities for supporting diversity, inclusion, and equitable access with new media in the library
  • Recognize strategies for empowering parents as media mentors

Expectations: This class is four weeks of content. There WILL be homework during the fourth week which will be due by the end of the fifth week. Although there are individual differences, you may expect each week to take 3 – 4 hours of work which includes the readings, watching the presentations, participating in forums, and submitting assignments.

Requirement: You will need access to one of these apps OR programmable devices designed for young children during week 3 and 4 of the course:

  • Scratch jr app by DevTech Research Group at Tufts University and the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab (free)
  • Play and Learn Science by PBS Kids (free)
  • Lexi’s World by PopPopPop
  • Coral Reef by Tinybop
  • Code-a-Pillar by Fischer Price
  • Cubetto by Primo Toys
  • Dash Robot by Wonder Workshop (and associated free apps)

This course is part of our Certificate in Early Childhood Literacy, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.

Annisha Jeffries

Annisha JeffriesAnnisha Jeffries is the Youth Services Department manager at the Cleveland Public Library. She has over 24 years of experience working in libraries, assisting youth and their families. System-wide responsibilities include leading monthly professional advancement meetings and knowledge sharing with the systems youth services staff. She holds a BS in Education from Cleveland State University and MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a 2000 American Library Association Spectrum Scholarship recipient and has served on various selection committees, including the 2018 Caldecott Committee, and was the Chair of the 2021 Caldecott Committee. Currently, she is the Chair of the Norman A Sugarman Children's Biography Award.
