In this class, you will learn how to create both high-energy and low-energy storytimes to meet the sensory, social-emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of children who have special needs. Class content will include strategies for reaching out to families who may struggle with attending traditional storytime programs, as well as best practices for promoting Sensory Storytimes in a socially and culturally sensitive way.

Children develop at different rates and have different strengths, needs, and abilities. Sensory Storytimes, which intentionally meet the diverse social-emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of children, include changes to the environment and schedule to best serve children who may have difficulties attending large group storytime programs for a variety of reasons. In this class, you will learn how to create both high-energy and low-energy storytimes to meet the sensory, social-emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of children who have special needs. Class content will include strategies for reaching out to families who may struggle with attending traditional storytime programs, as well as best practices for promoting Sensory Storytimes in a socially and culturally sensitive way.

After taking this class, successful participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between a high-energy Sensory Storytime and a low-energy Sensory Storytime
  • Identify specific changes in the environment that are needed to meet the needs of children need a high-energy and low-energy environment
  • Plan activities and experiences that meet a wide range of diverse needs that are characteristic of children who have difficulty attending traditional storytime programs
  • Advocate for and promote Sensory Storytime programs effectively

Expectations: This class is four weeks of content. There WILL be homework during the fourth week which will be due by the end of the fifth week. Although there are individual differences, you may expect each week to take 3 – 4 hours of work which includes the readings, watching the presentations, participating in forums, and submitting assignments.

This course is part of our Certificate in Early Childhood Literacy, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.
