Redefining Wellness for Librarians of Color

Instructor: Amanda Leftwich

Dates: April 6th through May 3rd, 2020

Credits: 1.5 CEUs or 15 PDHs

The emotional challenges of being a diverse person in librarianship have been studied, researched, and highlighted over the last few years. However, wellness directed specifically to librarians of color is a newer phenomenon. Librarians of color struggle with microaggressions, racism, and overall low-morale in the workplace. Amanda M. Leftwich’s personal work history and research on the topic resulted in recommendations of wellness, specifically for librarians of color.

Through the use of literature review, wellness check prompts, and community practice the participants in this course will analyze, reflect, and critically examine wellness in libraries and their own overall experiences.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand the importance of their own mental health;
  • Identify and disrupt barriers to wellness in their own workplace;
  • Foster positive mental health workplace policies and environments, including setting boundaries for their own wellness.
