In this course we will consider the role of the rare book and archives trade in Library Special Collections. Over our four weeks, we will explore how and why the trade benefits institutions; ethical considerations when working with dealers; the importance of fostering relationships to change how we approach rare books; and the broader ecosystem of the rare book world. Through the course, students will learn from and with members of the trade, as well as fellow librarians. They will learn about the importance of maintaining their institutional collecting interests and consider how and when to cultivate relationships with members of the trade.
