This intensive, applied “boot camp” provides a focused review of foundational research methods commonly taught in LIS programs, with emphasis on their application in health sciences librarianship. The course refreshes and strengthens understanding of research design, qualitative and quantitative methods including Reviews, survey development, basic statistical concepts, and critical appraisal resources of the literature. As well as be introduced to the 8 Rs of Research and Information Processing Framework.
Through hands-on exercises grounded in health sciences contexts, participants will practice framing research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, interpreting findings, and identifying methodological limitations.
Learners will leave prepared to:
– Support faculty and clinical research projects
– Conduct practice-based research
– Design assessment studies within their own libraries
– Contribute to the scholarly literature of librarianship
By the end of the boot camp, participants will be positioned to both support research activities and confidently initiate their own scholarly work.

Ayaba Logan, PhD, MPH, MLIS, AHIP is a medical librarian, maternal, global, and family health researcher, educator, and consultant committed to health equity and social justice. She holds a PhD in Health Sciences in Global Health, a Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan, a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alabama, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Spelman College. Through her consulting practice, she partners with universities, nonprofits, healthcare organizations, labs, research organizations, and doctoral students to translate complex health research into meaningful, equitable action.
