Our society’s deepening awareness of climate change is reflected in a proliferation of sustainability courses, programs and related activities in academia. A trans-disciplinary area of study, sustainability stretches beyond environmental awareness to include issues of economic viability and social justice concerns. This course focuses on the role of the academic librarian in the sustainability movement.
Through a reflective process, readings, exercises and participation in a discussion forum, you will connect to the community-inspired energy that drives the sustainability movement. The course walks you through the creation of an Action Plan that matches the needs of your library and institution and suits your comfort level for professional engagement. The instructors will offer individual feedback as you reflect on your own values and the influence you, the library profession, and your institution offer to the shaping of our future leaders.
Course Description

Jamie Conklin
Jamie Conklin is a Research & Education Librarian and the Liaison to the School of Nursing at Duke Medical Center Library & Archives. She attended a "Sustainability in the Curriculum" seminar in her previous position and now infuses the areas of environment, equity, and economy into her work. While at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus, she created a Sustainability Guide, built a sustainability collection with Illinois State Library grant funds, and collaborated with faculty and students to propose a campus sustainability office. Jamie is a member of the American Library Association Sustainability Round Table.
