Many people think of archives as having exclusively paper based material but the reality is that an archive will contain all different types of records such as photographs, drawings, film, artifacts and digital content. This course includes a comprehensive approach to preserving all types of records. We will look at collection storage, disaster management, the difference between preservation and conservation and then dig into how best to care for each of the above record types. Learning objectives:

  • Understand the responsibility of an archive in regards to preservation
  • Develop the skills needed to set up a secure archives environment
  • Knowledge of the best methods and resources for preserving all types of media
  • Understand how to be prepared and how to respond to numerous potential disasters

Carey Stumm

Carey StummCarey Stumm is an Archivist at the National Archives and Adjunct Professor at Queens College. She has worked in archives and museums for over 20 years. Past experience includes Digital Collection Librarian at Experience Music Project, Registrar and Collection Assistant at Museum of the Moving Image, Archivist and Collection Manager at New York Transit Museum, Collection Coordinator at Coney Island Museum.
