Crash Course in Assessing Library Instruction

This class is intended for teaching librarians who have some classroom experience and would like to explore different assessment techniques in library sessions, such as one-shots. Using Kirkpatrick’s Levels of Evaluation as a framework, we will discuss how to identify what you want to know and how to match your assessment need to the appropriate assessment technique, and practice assessing student artifacts using a sampling of methods. For each module, we will also discuss strategies for closing the assessment loop.
Course Description
This class is intended for teaching librarians who have some classroom experience and would like to explore different assessment techniques in library sessions, such as one-shots. Using Kirkpatrick’s Levels of Evaluation as a framework, we will discuss how to identify what you want to know and how to match your assessment need to the appropriate assessment technique, and practice assessing student artifacts using a sampling of methods. For each module, we will also discuss strategies for closing the assessment loop.
By the end of the class, participants will be able to:
- Identify student learning objectives which are reachable and meaningful for the participants’ setting
- Match the learning objective to the appropriate level of evaluation
- Select and apply the appropriate assessment technique for the stated need
- Communicate the benefits and challenge of specific assessment techniques
This four-week course will be asynchronous, but participants should plan to meet weekly deadlines.
This course can be taken as one of the courses in our eight-course Certificate in Library Instruction, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.
Candice Benjes-Small
Candice Benjes-Small is Head of Research at William & Mary Libraries. She sits on the university’s Assessment Steering Committee, and has worked on numerous instruction assessment projects, culminating in articles in Reference Services Review and Academic Exchange Quarterly, and presentations at ACRL and LOEX. Candice is co-author of the 2016 book, The New Instruction Librarian, and co-founder of The Innovative Library Classroom conference.
