Learning Objectives:
NOTE: This course does not address outreach/marketing to Latinos and Spanish-speakers, and is best suited for libraries that are already successfully serving these communities. Libraries interested in learning how to establish or improve services to Latino and Spanish-speaking families are encouraged to take the course, “Library Outreach and Marketing to Latinx and Spanish-Speaking Families.”
This course is part of our Certificate in Early Childhood Literacy, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.
Katie Scherrer is a consultant, writer, early childhood education trainer, librarian, yoga teacher, and the founder of Stories, Songs, and Stretches!, a startup devoted to enhancing early learning through embodied play. Katie began working in public libraries in 2005 and quickly discovered that her Spanish-language skills were in great demand. Completely unexpectedly, librarianship became her career and working with Latinx immigrant communities became her passion. At the same time, she discovered the practices of yoga and mindfulness, which slowly transformed her life into one of greater empowerment and less reactivity. Katie has been working as a consultant since 2012, helping libraries and educational organizations increase their inclusion of Latinx communities. She now travels across the country, sharing workshops on mindfulness, inclusion, yoga, and other related topics with librarians, educators, social workers, yoga teachers, and others who serve children and families. Her teaching style is encouraging and warm, while grounded in research and current best practices. Katie is an active member of ALSC (Association for Library Service to Children) and a lifetime member of REFORMA (The National Organization to Promote Library and Information Sciences to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking). She was a member of the 2013 Pura Belpré book award committee, and has published two books with the American Library Association, Once Upon a Cuento: Bilingual Storytimes in English and Spanish (coauthored with Jamie Campbell Naidoo) and Stories, Songs, and Stretches! Creating Playful Storytimes with Yoga and Movement. Find more at www.connectedcommunitiesconsulting.com and www.storiessongsandstretches.com.
