Innovation in Libraries

Innovation in libraries is not a new topic, but it is a challenging one to address due to the many variables that can influence forward movement such as organizational and institutional cultures, lack of dedicated resources, and confusion about what it really means to innovate.
This course will help participants build an innovation roadmap and examine such areas as effectuating transformational change to catalyze innovation; building an innovation strategy tied to organizational values; utilizing futures-thinking to drive strategic innovation; examining how failure drives innovation; moving from experimentation to action via user design methods, prototyping, and idea jams; and measuring innovation via networks of influence as well as storytelling.
Participants will be asked to bring a scenario within their institution where they will examine their innovation challenges, brainstorm potential solutions utilizing some of the tools from the course, and transform them into actionable items that they can work on after the course is over. Participants will engage with one another and the instructor via shared readings, exercises, as well as synchronous/asynchronous discussion.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Analyze the issues and challenges related to innovation in libraries,
- Generate new approaches to integrating innovation into organizational culture,
- Develop a set of tools to guide organizational change related to innovation regardless of role within an organization.
Cinthya Ippoliti is the Auraria Library University Librarian and Director. In that role, she provides direct administrative leadership for library services, spaces, partnerships, and programming on the tri-institutional Auraria Campus, which serves the University of Colorado, Denver; Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver. In collaboration with the Library’s senior management team, she sets the library’s strategic vision to develop new services, foster creativity and collaboration, and provide professional development and mentorship for faculty, staff, and student assistants. Previously, Cinthya served as the Associate Dean for Research and Learning Services at the Oklahoma State University libraries, and Head of Teaching and Learning at the University of Maryland libraries. She is a graduate of the Leading Change Institute and the Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians.
This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment.
