Building Business Connections in Your Community

Does your library have valuable business resources that you struggle to share and promote to the community? Do you have big plans for developing meaningful connections with small business owners, professionals and job seekers in your community but don’t know how to get started? Does networking, presenting or creating sustainable programs for the business community make you sweat? This course will walk you through all of the steps that are integral to taking your connections to the next level through embedded networking and structured library services.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Position yourself as an expert, speaker and trainer in the business community
- Understand how embedded business librarianship differs from providing outreach services and why it makes a difference
- Develop an action plan to making new networks and keeping them connected
- Create relevant presentations, programming, training and long-term initiatives that add value to the community
Barbara Alvarez has partnered with numerous library professionals, local businesses and organizations to share digital stories through podcasts, videos, and broadcasting. She is the co-founder of The Library OnConference, a free virtual conference completely held on Google Hangouts that has garnered nearly 500 participants. Additionally, she received the 2015 Public Librarian Support Award for innovation and creativity in the library’s community. She is the author of the book Embedded Business Librarianship for the Public Librarian with ALA Editions. Barbara received a Master in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign.
This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment.
