In a climate of competing priorities and dwindling budgets, libraries frequently must scramble for scarce resources. Whether you are in a public, school district, academic, or special library, demonstrating your library’s value to key constituents is a major factor in securing the library’s continued success and financial future. This program focuses on creating multi-layered marketing communication strategies to illustrate the library’s value to those who control library funding and to the community the library serves.

At the end of this course, participants will have created their own marketing plan and will be armed with the skills necessary to:

  • Identify key stakeholders and library champions
  • Develop key messages and create effective presentations to deliver your library’s story
  • Promote the library through marketing and outreach strategies
  • Explore and grow potential partnerships with library constituents

This course can be taken as one of six courses needed to earn our Certificate in Library Leadership and Management, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.

Deborah Schmidle

Deborah Schmidle is currently the principal consultant at Schmidle Consulting Services. She has developed and taught numerous organizational development-related workshops and has facilitated strategic-planning processes for libraries and library organizations. She holds an M.L.I.S. from Syracuse University and a Certificate in Contemporary Leadership from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. Course Structure

This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment.
